First, don't expect miracles.

Is it a digital picture? If it is you might be about to use the free photo editing program called GIMP.

1. Drag and drop your picture into GIMP.
2. In the toolbar, go to "Colors" and click it. (A submenu will open)
3. Scroll down to "Auto" and click it. (A submenu will open)
4. Click "Equalize"

Your pic may be a bit grainy, but it is worth a shot. Look at the before and after.
If you don't have GIMP, send me an note to my inbox and maybe I can try to fix it for you.

Here is a picture that was too dark that I took of my wife while she was sleeping. You can see the before and after. If anyone has any (LEGAL) pics that are too dark that they want me to lighten up, send them to my private inbox and I'll send them back to your inbox. No promise of perfection, it is worth a shot.
