It's all based on understanding the time when people come home after work, if you start at the times when it's most likely, and while walking around you notice big buildings and few windows with curtains because maybe they overlook a park and don't need privacy, they are the best places.

These photos are incredible. Because it is usually very dark indoors, the ISO needs to be very high, which inevitably leads to noise. The camera you used did not have the over-sharpening that would occur with cellphones.
